Hollywood

Jean- 6ème année

Hollywood is the capital of cinema and now, it’s a very touristic place. But why, it’s so well famous and who invented the Hollywood cinema?

In 1981, Thomas Edison created the firs cinema camera, the kinetograph. From 1893 to 1895, Dickson, the first filmmaker of cinema realized seventy films. You could watch films on a kinetoscope. Later, the cinematograph of Lumières brothers could project the films on a screen.

At the XXth century, the cinema industry is not really an industry and the cinema workers are not American but poor Jew immigrants. For them, the cinema is an art and not just an entertainment. In 1900, the first independent producer made short films at New York, but in 1910, Hollywood becomes the main film production centre and it’s that year that a lot of bigs stars were born like: Florence Turner, Charlie Chaplin or Mary Pickford.

During 1970 and 1980, western movies will decline and sci-fi or superhero movie will increase. You could see Star Wars of Georges Lucas (1977) or E.T. of Steven Spielberg (1982). Those films with a large budget were made to make a lot of money.

Today, it’s one of the biggest movie companies of the world.
